Can you imagine your financial life without credit cards? No? In case you have no problems with your credit history, there will be no problems with obtaining a plastic. Otherwise there are also some offers especially for the customers with bad or no credit. However, these have much more strict terms and conditions, and the features of such credit cards are not as favorable as you may expect. Moreover, your credit may be so bad (plus, the credit history containing some really bad points!) that banks simply do not accept your application. And if they do not, your credit score falls down even more... What should you do? The best solution for people with bad credit score or beginners is regarded to be a secured credit card.
A secured credit card works just like other plastics, however there is a considerable difference. When obtaining such a card, you have to deposit a definite amount of money to secure your credit. What does that mean? The money you deposit will be your savings account. In case you are not able to pay off your balance, the bank will use this money to cover the debt. In general the deposit varies from $200 to $500. Keep in mind that your credit limit will be equal to the amount of the money deposited. Nevertheless, there are some banks which allow the credit limit of the doubled sum of this money.
You should take into consideration: a secured card is a CREDIT card, not a debit one. So we strongly recommend you to make your payments on time, since, just like in case with every credit card, the DEFAULT interest rate will be charged. Nevertheless, failing to pay on time does not mean that your bank will use your savings account at once. This happens only 'in an emergency'.
When a client holds a secured credit card, a bank reports the payments to all major credit bureaus, so your credit history develops stably. That is how you prove that you are able to pay on time and in good faith. After all, your credit score rises, and so you will be eligible to apply for other credit cards, with greater credit limit and more favorable terms. As of secured plastics, the terms and conditions of these vary. Here are some points to take into consideration before you apply for any secured plastics.
Yes, your credit is bad, or maybe you are a beginner. But this does not necessarily mean that the rates will be the highest. Compare the offers; there are some credit cards with really low APRs. Moreover, there are also some offers with $0 annual fee. Some cards also offer grace period! And finally, credit report. If a bank reports to all major credit bureaus, as it is in case with the secured credit cards, it is much faster and easier to build your credit history.
